NOSPR in Chamber Mode / Grieg & Mussorgsky
Ludwig Holberg was originally Norwegian. However, it was as the father of Danish theatre and the literary Danish language that he found fame. An Enlightenment luminary, he rose to prominence during his time as professor of the University of Copenhagen, when he was co-creator of the repertoire of the capital’s Lille Grønnegade Theatre. Grieg’s From Holberg’s Time suite was composed in 1884, on the 200th anniversary of the playwright’s birth, styled on the structure of a baroque suite. Mussorgsky’s series of piano miniatures was born ten years before out of the composer’s experience of an exhibition of paintings by the prematurely deceased Viktor Hartmann. Grieg attempted to recreate Holberg’s era with the language of sounds, while Mussorgsky attempted to use the same to recreate images previously painted on paper and canvas. Today, both compositions are going to be interpreted in yet another, separate manner, by a wind ensemble accompanied by a piano.
