NOSPR in Chamber Mode / Świder, Haydn, Fauré & Mahler
It takes a masterstroke and considerable luck to take concert halls around the world by storm with a short form styled on a slow dance. The wind instruments in Gabriel Fauré’s Pavane are like a soft dress that was worn for a dance at the Spanish court. A softness of sound, however, has its depth – these are also wind instruments that precede the first words of Gustav Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder. There melodic lines are intertwining in secessionist whirls, accompanying an act of expressing pain and love. This is one of Mahler’s most piercing pieces. Bohdan Pociej, an expert on the composer’s body of work, found the cycle show clear signs of expressionism.
