Mozart completed his Piano Concerto in C minor shortly before the premiere of The Marriage of Figaro – an opera so different in its mood that, according to some scholars, it served as a safety valve for the quite contradictory emotions that the mature artist was experiencing. The fact that Smetana’s Symphony in E major had already contained seeds of the ideas which shone their full light in The Bartered Bride and My Fatherland was only revealed to the listeners before the composer’s death. Kabeláč’s Symphony No. 4 carries with it the same mood of dark mystery as No. 8 composed near the end of his life. Three stages of composing genius in a brilliantly conceived programme for one concert.

Tymoteusz Bies is without doubt the most colourful young pianist on the Polish music scene, displaying phenomenal technique, huge charisma and an unconventional approach to his art. This year, he returns to the NOSPR as artist-in-residence for the 2020/2021 season. We will hear him in a wide-ranging concert and chamber repertoire, and also during workshops devoted to his other passion – the production of hip-hop music.
