Music has a remarkable ability to transport us to places we cannot see, yet can readily imagine. How far can our musical imagination take us? Where do familiar sounds end and entirely new horizons begin? This educational concert is an invitation to embark on a journey through musical landscapes and discover just how evocative the soundscapes created by composers can be when they have a symphony orchestra at their disposal.

Our point of departure is South America – a continent whose musical identity has grown out of the encounter between many different traditions. The music of Antônio Carlos Gomes reveals not only connections with European opera, but an equally distinctively Brazilian sensitivity to colour and rhythm. Ronaldo Miranda uses the resources of the orchestra in an entirely different way, exploring space, tension and a constantly shifting perspective. His Horizontes invites us to listen not only to individual instruments, but also to the ways in which the orchestral sound emerges and transforms.

The guitar will occupy a special place in the October concert – an instrument more commonly associated with chamber music than with a large symphony orchestra. In Joby Talbot’s Ink Dark Moon, these two worlds meet on equal terms. The soloist engages the orchestra in a dialogue charged with tension, at times blending into its sound and at others emerging clearly into the foreground. It is an excellent opportunity to discover that an instrument’s power lies in what a composer and performer are able to draw from it.

This concert is an invitation to listen to the orchestra much as we might look at a map – one filled with places that can be explored in many different ways. After all, sometimes the most fascinating journeys begin not with the first step, but with the first sound.

The concert is intended for pupils in grades 7–8 of primary school and secondary-school students.

Admission is free.

Registration for the event will be via an online form and will open on 8 September 2026 at 2.00 pm. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Confirmation of participation will be sent by 11 September 2026.
