JazzKLUB / Joanna Duda / Born of a Passion for Rhythm and Electronics
Joanna Duda has been quietly defying labels for years, refusing to let the word ‘jazz’ contain her. For her, jazz is simply where the journey begins – a gateway into vast sound explorations. She is not only a pianist, improviser, and composer, but also a sound performer. This influence manifests in her experiments with electronics and her attempts to translate that language into the format of a jazz trio. Equally central to her work is rhythm, which she describes as the primary driving force behind her creative activity: rhythm provides energy, rhythm shapes form. This rhythmic emphasis was evident on the trio’s debut album, Fumitsuke, and became even more pronounced on their second record, Delighted (2025). Duda has been developing her trio format since 2017. In Katowice she will appear with her long-time collaborator, i.e. the drummer Michał Bryndal, and Amsterdam-based double bassist Jort Terwijn.
