Jort Terwijn is a Dutch double bassist, composer, and improviser based in Amsterdam. Active within the contemporary jazz and creative music scene, he is known for his exploratory approach to sound, combining acoustic textures with electronic elements and immersive sonic landscapes.
Terwijn studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he developed his voice as both a performer and composer. During his studies, he was awarded the Conservatorium Award in 2018, recognizing his exceptional artistry and musical vision. In 2023, he received the Keep an Eye Award, further establishing his position as a distinctive voice within the Dutch jazz scene.
He is the founder and bandleader of Önder, an innovative bass-centered ensemble that expands the role of low-frequency instruments through layered arrangements, improvisation, and subtle use of electronics. With Önder, Terwijn released Önder, Vol. 1 (2021) and Önder, Vol. 2 (2023), presenting a distinctive sound world that moves between hypnotic minimalism and avant-garde energy. In 2021, the ensemble won the Biopartner Leiden Jazz Award, recognizing their originality and artistic vision.
In addition to his own projects, Terwijn is an active collaborator and member of several internationally oriented ensembles, including the Joanna Duda Trio, the Teis Semey Quintet, and the Sam Newbould Quintet. Through these collaborations, he contributes to a wide range of contemporary jazz expressions across Europe.
Terwijn has performed multiple times at the internationally renowned North Sea Jazz Festival, sharing his music with broad audiences and further cementing his presence on major stages. Beyond his performing career, Terwijn is also active as an educator, teaching double bass and ensemble playing in Amsterdam. Through his projects, Jort Terwijn continues to explore the expressive possibilities of the double bass, pushing its role beyond traditional boundaries while remaining deeply connected to the spirit of improvisation.
