Sinfonia Varsovia / Jerzy Maksymiuk - NOSPR
Sinfonia Varsovia / Jerzy Maksymiuk
In an interview for Polish Radio, Jerzy Maksymiuk emphasised the great difficulties posed for performers by Beethoven’s Second Symphony. Although betraying distinct echoes of Mozart and Haydn, it requires a more intense sound of the orchestra and a meticulous building of climax on the part of the conductor. Although long regarded as one of Beethoven’s less progressive symphonies, its graceful, optimistic phrases conceal unusual harmonic combinations, sudden changes of mood and tumultuous passages from which we can divine the direction in which the composer was developing.
Schönberg’s poem for chamber forces was given a cool reception by both the Viennese Music Society and the city’s concert-goers. In the late nineteenth century, the story of the remarkable feelings between a man and a woman bearing a child conceived with another man seemed just as controversial as the chord used by Schönberg that had never previously been classified.
