Haydn was a generation older than Mozart, which did not prevent him from admiring Wolfgang Amadeus's genius and drawing more or less obvious inspirations from his work. They can also be captured in Symphony No. 95 in C minor from 1791, which cross one’s mind associations not only with Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K. 491 but also with his “Jupiter” Symphony. Piano Concerto No. 9 in E flat major, K. 271 was written fourteen years earlier, when Mozart was in his early twenties. Charles Rosen, however, did not hesitate to call this composition the first true masterpiece of the classical style. If one were to put both pieces on a scale measuring musical maturity, the scale wouldn't even budge.
