Poulenc’s Concerto for 2 pianos and orchestra in D minor was once aptly named “a most pretty chocolate box” – and, quite counterintuitively, there is no offence in the name. The piece has never actually lost its popularity and is still rightly considered one crowning the French composer’s early period. Contrarily, Martinů’s Concerto for 2 violins and orchestra in D major, composed a dozen years later, lacked the slightest bit of luck. Though successful at premiere, it was only published after the composer’s death and fell into oblivion for a few dozen years. Yet both deserve musicians’ and listeners’ regard alike – regardless of the whims of history, regardless of any limit of unfavourable or favourable coincidences.
