It is difficult to believe that a young person can predict their own death as accurately as Schubert did it in the String Quartet No. 14. The mysterious subtitle refers to the Death and the Maiden lied, composed in 1817 for the poem by Matthias Claudius and used in the second movement of Andante. Yet, the piece reflects the struggle between life and death in its entirety, with its opulence of sudden key changes and transformations of the melodic line. Glazunov’s youthful Novelettes are apparently as different from Schubert’s masterpiece as they could be. The Valse, however, breaks away from a general compositional scheme with similar contrasting moods and a similar tension preceding recapitulation as those to be found in the final “dance of death” in Schubert’s Quartet. One does not need to have one foot in the grave to feel that the Reaper will lull us to sleep one day.
