NOSPR / Angus Webster / Elgar & Williams
Edward Elgar, a self-taught composer who grew up in the country, had to wait a long time for critical acclaim and the favour of British audiences. Even a year after his knighthood, which should have set the seal of approval on his music, his new work, the Introduction and Allegro, was coolly received. It took some time for music lovers to relish its graceful themes, its elaborate fugue and the original form of a romantic concerto grosso scored for string quartet and string orchestra.
Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Second ‘London’ Symphony, meanwhile, enjoyed public appreciation from the start. Yet it was a long time before the work assumed its ultimate form. After the first performance, in March 1914, the composer sent the manuscript to Germany, but it got lost on the way in the turmoil of war. The parts were written out again, and Vaughan Williams made revisions over subsequent years, striving to impart a more succinct form to his composition. He only sent the final version to print 22 years after the first performance.
