Sir Malcolm Arnold became renowned for his film music. He co-created crime dramas and psychological thrillers – like "Suddenly, last summer" with Elizabeth Taylor, Katherine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift – as well as war epics such as "The Thin Red Line" and "The Bridge on the River Kwai," for which he received an Oscar. Shortly after receiving the award, Arnold presented the neoclassically styled and accessible Kwartet obojowy op. 61 – a work highlighting the virtuosity of the oboist, with a clear reference to the famous theme from Tchaikovsky's Andantina z VI Symfonii.
Ernest John Moeran never achieved a success comparable to Arnold's – an English-Irish creator of works inspired by the folklore of the British Isles. Kwartet-Fantazja with its lyrical oboe theme and the neoclassical Trio smyczkowe G-dur carry the easily recognizable yet still poorly known spirit of classical music from this part of Europe in Poland.
