Richard Bona is a Cameroonian multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, bass player, composer, sound director and producer. Behind this list there is life, on the basis of which many books could be written. He was born in 1967 in Minta, a small village in Cameroon. At the age of five he started to learn to play the balafon (a melodic percussion instrument with wooden bars), performing in the traditional music band where his grandfather played. After moving to Douala, the then eleven-year-old Bona started to play as a guitarist in a dance band. At that time he discovered his interest in jazz music. In 1989 he moved to Paris and then to New York City (1995), quickly becoming one of the best jazzmen of his generation in both cities. His charisma was immediately appreciated by the greatest jazz giants: Bobby McFerrin, the band Steps Ahead and finally Pat Metheny himself, who offered him a place in his legendary "Group". Bona travelled around the world in the company of legends and soon became famous as the author of his own projects, strongly rooted in African tradition, but at the same time with European harmonic tradition and American freedom inherent in the jazz world. Bona's eclectic style eludes clear judgments from critics. "Every bass player who watches me thinks that I play something different than it really is. The technique I use allows me to combine everything with everything, balafon, guitar and vocals. It looks weird. The way I move is not typical for a bass player. Is that bad? I don't know. - This is Bona.
Alfredo Rodriguez - pianist and composer born in 1985, is the older of Alfredo Rodríguez's two sons, a singer and composer of romantic songs and a TV presenter. He studied in the piano class at the Manuel Saumell Conservatory and then at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory of Music as well as the Instituto Superior de Arte, all located in Havana. In 2003 he won a distinction in a competition for young jazz musicians. In 2006 he also triumphed at the Montreux Jazz Festival. In 2007 he founded his first band: Alfredo Rodrigueza Trio, together with Gastón Joya (double bass) and Michael Oliver (drums). In 2009 Rodriguez accompanied his father as a member of the band on a tour to Mexico.
His album "Tocororo" has been well received by many Latin American jazz enthusiasts. The title Tocororo is a bird that dies of sadness in a cage, it reflects not only the very quest for freedom but also its necessity. These are only some of the symbols on "Tocororo". The album is full of expressive themes. Alfredo has worked with jazz artists such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Patti Austin, James Ingram, McCoy Tyner, Esperanza Spalding and Richard Bona. The sound of his music is recognized from the first note.
In addition, the duo Richard Bona and Alfredo Rodriguez will be accompanied by a team of four wonderful musicians.
