Silesian Quartet / Piotr Sałajczyk / Generation '51 on their 70th birthday
Eugeniusz Knapik’s String QuartetNo. 2 is dedicated: To the Silesian String Quartet on the 40th anniversary of their stage activity. We are extraordinarily proud of it. The scale and gravity of the work justify the time for which it had been awaited. It was as early as on the 25th anniversary of our activity that we first asked prof. Knapik for a new quartet, but there was alway something in the way. Sometimes it was his ‘rectoring’, sometimes the consecutive operas, but every time we asked about a new quartet, we would always get the answer ‘I have a concept already and I know it will be difficult’. The concept was only materialised in 2019, premiered at NOSPR on 25th May that very year, and all I can add is: it was not easy. The piece, designed for about 35–40 minutes, is a most challenging one in every aspect, both technically and emotionally. It develops and intensifies all the properties of Knapik’s composing language from 1980, while his skill in utilising various techniques inspires respect and true awe.
During the concert we will hear Gustaw Mahler’s unfinished Piano Quartet and Henryk Mikołaj Górecki’s String QuartetNo. 1.
