Kronos Quartet at the NOSPR - concert postponed
An outstanding string quartet with the only concert in Poland! The Kronos Quartet is famous for its virtuosity, versatility, and creative approach to the world's musical tradition. The two-time Grammy award winners have recorded over 1000 pieces, spanning classical, contemporary, jazz, rock, folk, and experimental music. They have collaborated with the greatest names in the world of music, including the late composer Henryk Mikołaj Górecki. During their concert at the NOSPR the Kronos Quartet will present a specially prepared repertoire.
For almost 50 years the American group has been implementing a unique artistic vision. David Harrington (violin), John Sherba (violin), Hank Dutt (viola) and Sunny Yang (cello) combine fearless musical exploration with a constant redefinition of the role of a string quartet. The group has released over 60 albums of extraordinary breadth and creativity and has produced over 1,000 works and arrangements for string quartet. Kronos Quartet are two-time Grammy Award winners.
The group was formed in 1973 in San Francisco by violinist David Harrington. The group's repertoire is very eclectic and includes music of 20th century masters (Béla Bartók), contemporary composers (Terry Riley, Philip Glass), jazz legends (Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman), rock icons (Jimi Hendrix), and experimental artists (Laurie Anderson). The group's versatile activity also includes a series of long-term, in-depth collaborations with the world's leading composers. The Kronos Quartet has recorded, among others, three string quartets written especially for the ensemble by Henryk Mikołaj Górecki. The collaboration with the famous Polish composer lasted over 25 years. In turn, the band was commissioned by NASA to record a multimedia ode to Earth and its inhabitants, which was composed by the group's long-time collaborator Terry Riley. Sun Rings contains celestial sounds and images from outer space, but the American group also makes abundant use of the musical output of the globe. Kronos Quartet's albums have explored, among other things, the achievements of contemporary African composers, the sounds of Bollywood, the tradition of the Roma people, Mexican culture, and local folk songs. The collaborators of the Kronos Quartet include world virtuosos such as the master of the Chinese pipa lute Wu Man, the legendary Indian singer Asha Bhosle, the Inuit singer Tanya Tagaq, the Mexican rockers Café Tacuba, the famous Azerbaijani singer Alim Qasimov, or the legend of the American scene, songwriter Tom Waits. The Kronos Quartet has also performed live with such artists as Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Patti Smith, Allen Ginsberg, Jarvis Cocker, Zakir Hussain, Modern Jazz Quartet, Van Dyke Parks, Caetano Veloso, and many, many others. The American quartet's output also includes original soundtracks to such famous films as Requiem for a Dream or The Fountain.
Their versatility, originality, and extraordinary virtuosity have given the Kronos Quartet an exceptional position on the contemporary scene. The autumn concert in Katowice will be an opportunity to meet one of the most important bands of our times.
