Liszt, Elgar, Smetana - Symphonic Organ Transcriptions
The only instrument capable of rivaling a symphonic orchestra in terms of its range of colors, dynamic possibilities, and complex textures? The organ. This is precisely why organ transcriptions of classical orchestral works often appear in program repertoires. Jonathan Scott, a pianist and organist born in Manchester, specializes in transcribing symphonic and vocal-instrumental pieces for the organ. He has created over 400 of his own arrangements and adaptations!
This array of arrangements encompasses compositions from various epochs, styles, and ensembles for which these pieces were intended: from the music of Bach and the Chaconne from the Second Partita, to the Overture from Gioacchino Rossini's opera "The Thieving Magpie." What kind of challenge is it to adapt music with such lively and dynamic sounds, with clearly audible motifs from the entire opera, in which the titular magpie steals successive elements of precious tableware?
