The folk violin, the Gypsy violin, the Romantic violin. Most distinct elements and traditions, sometimes battling within one piece. As it is in Ravel’s virtuosic Tzigane, which can be perceived as a manifestation of fascination with oriental folklore in music. Although the French composer did not base his work upon any particular Romani theme, its original version used the lutheal, i.e. a grand piano with added cimbalom-like registers. The style of folk music-making on the violin is also clear to be heard in Bacewicz’s short Humoresque, the composer having been a renowned virtuoso of the instrument in her youth. There is a tad less of it in Sinding’s Suite, although he himself is, alongside Grieg, a leading representative of Norwegian national style. Naturally, the slightly lesser exposure given to this feature does not diminish the brilliance of the show piece in the slightest.
