Fairytale Images in Chamber Music - NOSPR
Fairytale Images in Chamber Music
The idea of characteristic pieces – capturing specific moods in instrumental miniatures – fit the philosophy of musical Romanticism perfectly. Short compositions were micro-stories saturated with a fairytale quality, an otherworldly aura; devoid of text, they remained intriguingly undefined. Such are Märchenbilder – Fairytale Images by Robert Schumann, titled only with tempo indications, not referring to fictional characters yet clearly telling something. Pohádka (which means Fairytale) by Leoš Janáček from 1910 already exhibits more illustrative music, several scenes selected from the Russian Fairy Tale of Tsar Berendey.
Arnold Schönberg's Transfigured Night (1899) is a programmatic narrative for adults. Based on a poem by Richard Dehmel that touches upon matters of faithfulness and forgiveness, it captures a continuous ebb and flow of emotions and reflects an erotic tension in its sounds. Romanticism at its ultimate point.
