Everyone’s first impressions of the CD Songplay are the same: the opening bars of the Baroque aria ‘Se tu m’ami’ suggest that the great star is making a nostalgic return to repertoire from her formative years, in order to finally sing it comme il faut. But wait! What are those drums doing there? Why are the harmonies drifting apart?! What profanation! Hmmm… Although…? It’s actually pretty good. Very good in fact. Oh my god, it’s so beautiful! IT’S THE BEST RECORD IN THE WORLD!! Such was the irresistible impression made on the jury of the Grammy Awards, who gave Joyce the statuette for Best Classical Vocal Solo Album.
