Masterfully / Piotr Orzechowski "Pianohooligan" / / Critique of Swing
Two-part concert
The programme includes material from the album "24 Preludes & Improvisations" and the latest material recorded at the NOSPR in January 2021 ("Critique of Swing" pre-release).
The art of improvisation had been an essential feature of music itself for millennia and one essential for pianistics since the very conception of the piano. However, a century ago, it stepped down from concert stages: pianists began to perceive their role strictly as that of imitators rather than creators. Nonetheless, it was virtually at the same moment that it was reborn when the piano was adapted by the recently born jazz.
Thus, it was jazz that gave rise to the art of Piotr Orzechowski, known to the world as Pianohooligan. It was, however, but a point of departure. On his most original path, the young pianist has been discovering and experiencing most varied traditions and challenges. Pianohooligan has been “playing with” consecutive musical worlds: a few years ago it was young Penderecki’s avant-garde work, folk music, and subsequently – in the Preludes and Improvisations – became embroiled in a dispute with the chromatic system. Today, he is returning to the golden era of jazz – the swing era – with another look at his roots. However, no man steps into the same river twice. What will be the result of a new look at classical themes taken after the artist’s exceptional journey?
