Winning the Chopin Competition was not Garrick Ohlsson’s first step to fame, but it was the decisive one. In 1970, the 22-year-old American had already been an experienced heir of two pianistic traditions, the first being the Russian tradition, dominant in the USA and beloved for its “grand manner”, and the second deriving from Liszt. It was, however, the title he won in Warsaw that helped him enter the most prominent stages. He has remained an important person thereupon, presenting a most varied repertoire of both solo and chamber performances.
The programme of the concert in Katowice is an excellent example thereof. Half of it will be filled with Chopin’s works: three late epic works contrasted with the Etudes op. 10, the latter having proved revolutionary for pianistic technique and the Romantic sensitivity. However, the two works to be performed before provide a counterpoint in their own right, as Brahms was Chopin’s publisher and Szymanowski an open admirer of his work.
