Music from Notre Dame Cathedral - NOSPR
Music from Notre Dame Cathedral
For some, a historic sanctuary and a symbol of royal and spiritual authority; for others, a tourist attraction of historic significance. The Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris remains a vibrant and internationally recognized cultural center. Organists have played an important role in liturgical ceremonies here for centuries, and today, young enthusiasts of this art continue to dream of performing on its renowned stage. The local instrument, built by the organ-making workshop of Jean-Loup Boisseau three decades ago, boasts over 8000 pipes, enabling the execution of diverse musical repertoires and thus attracting distinguished organists. It also draws crowds of music-loving tourists from all corners of the globe who gather to listen to resident cathedral organists, some of the best in the world.
One such artist holding this distinguished title is Olivier Latry, who became the titular organist of the Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris at the age of just 23. At that time, he was a student of Gaston Litaize. Presently, he teaches at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris and is regarded as one of the most esteemed and recognizable organ virtuosos globally. He has gained acclaim for his performances of canonical organ works and his inventive improvisations.
He has performed in the world's most prestigious concert halls, appeared as a guest with leading orchestras under the direction of renowned conductors, recorded for major labels, and premiered an impressive number of new compositions. In his recital program, alongside the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, compositions by French composers with an inseparable connection to the Notre-Dame Cathedral will be featured.
