NOSPR / Pinchas Steinberg - NOSPR
NOSPR / Pinchas Steinberg
The artistic personality of Pinchas Steinberg met with marked approval from the NOSPR musicians when they worked meticulously with him on articulating his vision of the works of Haydn and Bartók on the programme of last season’s inaugural concert. This time, the Israeli conductor has turned to a cycle of musical tableaux by Bedřich Smetana – a fruit of the composer’s aspiration to crystallising Czech national style in music. Each of the movements of Má Vlast is a separate symphonic poem exploring a different aspect of a Romantic vision of his beloved homeland. Vltava and From Bohemian Fields and Groves illustrate a landscape of idyllic fields, forests and villages through which a branch of the country’s longest river wends its way; Tábor and Blaník, based on a Hussite chorale, evoke the history of the Hussite Wars, while Šárka and Vyšehrad transport us to a world of tales about valiant women who waged a bloody battle against male authority and legends of a fortress perched on the edge of a cliff.
