'Carpe Diem – as if Beethoven lived in Odessa' for symphony orchestra
Borys Latoszyński
Piano Concerto in C minor ('Slavic')
Valentin Silvestrov
Symphony No. 8
Borys Lyatoshynsky is considered the father of the Ukrainian contemporary compositional school. In his Piano Concerto in C minor ('Slavic'), full of drama and dark tones, we can hear echoes of Rachmaninov’s post-romantic concertos as well as Ukrainian and Russian folk songs.
Valentin Silvestrov – an outstanding composer, a student of Borys Lyatoshynsky. Silvestrov’s music, filled with reverie and melancholy, after a period of experiments and searching for new sounds in the 1960s, turned towards tonality.
