‘Scottish Fantasy’ in E flat major for violin and orchestra, Op. 46
Johannes Brahms
Serenade No. 2 in A major, Op. 16
Brahms and Bruch are almost exactly contemporaries – both born in the 1830s. They are symbols of the creative development of the output of the past. Their works have little in common with programme music, representing only themselves – combinations of sounds to which the listener may impart some meaning. However, Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, a favourite with music lovers, is a highly romantic concept employing beautiful traditional melodies.
