After the horrors of the Great War, people needed consolation. That could be found, for instance, in an old Russian folk tale about a soldier who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for a book containing prophecies of the future. In cooperation with his friend, the Swiss writer Charles Ramuz, Igor Stravinsky decided to transform the tale into a work inspired by old wandering theatres. L’histoire du soldat is, to an extent, a mirror for the epoque: a piece relatively simple in production and reception, full of spectacular references to jazz, tango, Viennese salon music and Russian folklore, yet simultaneously a sad goodbye to a world that was no more to return on its old tracks.
