NOSPR Chamber ensembles / Onslow & Rheinberger
A nonet is almost a small orchestra – an ensemble composed of nine performers is considered the largest one able to perform chamber music freely, with perfect rapport between the musicians and no need for assistance from a conductor. However, the aspect of fundamental significance in such an ensemble are proportions: it is not every piece for nine instruments that can simply be called a nonet. The standard was developed by Louis Spohr in his 1831 Grand Nonetto in F major for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, violin, viola, cello and double bass. Spohr’s standard of a nonet was further used by other 19th-century composers, including Onslow and Rheinberger, who were particularly popular in Germany. The time for experiments was only to come with the onset of the next century.
