NOSPR in Chamber Mode / Mozart - NOSPR
NOSPR in Chamber Mode / Mozart
In Rome, the primus inter pares expression was used to refer to the princeps, the first among members of the Senate. The official so adorned had the privilege of opening discussion on motions brought for consideration and thus had a significant influence on the proceedings. Musicologists use the term to refer to chamber pieces in which the role of “the first senator” is assumed by one of the instruments. Mozart’s works provide ample example of this, for instance in the Clarinet Quintet, a sign of the Clarinet Concerto to come, as well as in the Oboe Quartet, in which the virtuoso part of the oboe exceeds the standard scale several times. Even the Flute Quartet, relatively simple in terms of technique, hides in itself a seed of the “operatic” adagio from the Piano Concerto No. 23. Mozart was the first to leave the door of musical individualism ajar: after all, somebody had to be the first, even among equals.
