NOSPR in Chamber Mode / NOSPR brass section (concert postponed)
Concert postponed, new date - 2.02.2023. Tickets remain valid.
The origins of brass bands backed by a drum set can be traced back to the 19th century. Their background is not only the tradition of military bands, but also British workers’ communities’ bands, led by the Stalybridge Old Band, founded in 1809 and still active. Local miners’ and steelworks workers’ performances have been enlivening the communities’ celebrations for years. The standard membership of such an ensemble was established in the 1950s by the New York Eastman Wind Ensemble. The only piece to be performed this evening which was composed with this type of ensemble in mind is Copland’s Fanfare, inspired by vice president Henry Wallace’s, co-founder of the Progressive Party, speech. The remaining pieces are arrangements – their existence itself providing even more compelling evidence of the vitality and energy of an ensemble composed of horns, trombones, tuba, and the indispensable drums.
Duration of the concert: approx. 65 minutes
