NOSPR in Chamber Mode / Piazzolla, Paganini, Bach & others
The beginning of carnival may be celebrated not only in the splendour of a full orchestra, but also among a group of instruments of a low, some would say dark, sound. Nonetheless, when given their chance, the cellos and the double basses will take us into Astor Piazzola’s Libertango with a fiery energy no lesser than that delivered by the Maestro’s ensemble in the original 1974 recording, while in Henry Mancini’s Moon River, they will evoke the atmosphere of the Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
Music by Giovanni Bottesini will lend the programme a classical quality. The double bass virtuoso’s Passione amorosa is an instrumental equivalent of a dramatic scene in an opera. Virtuosos of the first half of the 19th century adored building their repertoire on arrangements of theatre hits – suffice it to mention one of Niccolò Paganini’s most popular works, Variations on a theme from Gioachino Rossini’s Mosè in Egitto, which will also be featured during the concert.
