NOSPR in Chamber Mode / Wojciech Kilar – film music
A list of films scored by Wojciech Kilar would simultaneously constitute a short history of Polish cinema and a review of Oscar-winning titles. The composer himself was never awarded an Oscar, yet collaborations with Francis Ford Coppola, Jerzy Hoffman, Roman Polański, Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Zanussi won him a perennial place in the chronicles of cinematic art. While his characteristic harmonies render the music easily recognisable, one ought to remember that Kilar was also a master of pastiche – suffice it to mention the Jealousy and Medicine tango, the Leper waltz, and the Pan Tadeusz polonaise, ruthlessly exploited at countless proms in Polish high schools. Aware of the power of self-restraint in dramaturgy, Kilar would still admit being drawn towards grand scenes and immensely powerful emotions. He could compose both sparsely and with a vivid imagination. His themes encourage one to discover classical cinema, and chamber musicians of the NOSPR will prove that the music does not need a grand orchestra to grip the listener.
