NOSPR Chamber ensembles / Beethoven, Mahler & Schnittke (canceled)
According to health&safety restrictions from the 4th November 2020, all cultural institutions, including ours, are closed to the public.
Because of this, we regret to inform you that this concert had to be canceled.
The programme of today’s concert is imbued with an atmosphere of menace and mourning. Beethoven was moved to write the second movement of his Quartet in F major after reading Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet, specifically the scene in the crypt, when Romeo drinks the poison before the eyes of the supposedly dead Juliet. A discussion of the Piano Quartet – the only surviving chamber composition by Mahler – occupies a prominent place in the thriller Shutter Island, set in a psychiatric facility for criminals. Schnittke’s dark, brooding Piano Quintet is a tribute to two individuals deceased: the composer’s mother and his adored Shostakovich. Today we will hear a lament from the living and the sounds of strings brushed by spirits – a musical communion of saints.
