Emil Młynarski
Violin Concerto No. 2 in D major, Op. 16
Anton Bruckner
Symphony No. 4 in E flat major (‘Romantic’)

Arguably Młynarski’s best work will be paired tonight with undoubtedly the most popular piece among compositions of Bruckner. Violin concerto no. 2 written in 1916, was first performed four years later, in the Warsaw Philharmonic conducted by the composer, and Pavel Kochanski as a phenomenal soloist. It was enthusiastically received by the audience and mercilessly reviewed by critics poking holes in it and finding alleged influences of Tchaikovsky and Strauss. Marcin Gmys noticed though there can rather be heard more Brahms or Elgar instead. Anyhow, it is certainly Młynarski himself we can hear – his in-depth feeling for the instrument and his unparalleled melodic talent. His Symphonyno. 4 – which happens to be the first finally well received by wider audience – Bruckner himself called the Romantic one. He also provided detailed programme description: ‘A medieval town – dawn – a morning call can be heard from its towers – the gates open – knights on their fine horses rush out shrouded in the magic of nature – forest murmuring – birds singing – and so there is this romantic scene’. The success, however, did not come easily; before a sneered-at juggins could enjoy a standing ovation at the Vienna premiere in 1881, he had already corrected the score three times, though it had been originally completed seven years earlier. And it turned out not to be in vain, as it was complemented even by Max Kalber, Bruckner’s avid critic. And yet again some comparisons to Beethoven’s symphonies seemed to be inevitable, but in The Fourth one can first of all hear Bruckner himself – particularly in an effervescent, ‘hunters’ Scherzo, which gallops on like the proud knights’ coursers.
