Should each and every work coming from a genius be compared with their most exquisite achievements? What Artur Schnabel said about Mozart’s piano sonatas, that they are too easy for children and too difficult for adults, could as well be said about the Violin Concerto KV 207 – many artists underestimate it all too precipitately, especially in comparison with the most spectacular and the most mature Concerto in A major KV 219. As for Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, it seems a piece perfect for those adults who have not lost a child’s sensitivity. It is, in its own way, one of the most moving compositions ever created by the Master from Bonn, who wrote it so that it suited first and foremost himself.
