New Year's Eve concert / NOSPR / Clelia Cafiero
A visit to the „El Salón México” dance club in the capital of Mexico was a culture shock for the elegant New Yorker Aaron Copland. Three dancefloors: for those dressed like the tourists from the US, for those wearing anything as long as they wore shoes, and for those dancing barefoot. A crazy energy and enjoying the flavour of life. Copland was aware of his inability to grasp the richness of Mexican culture after one visit, so he purposefully created a tourist’s “postcard”. Its form makes a listener feel as if walking through all the three rooms, with three social classes dancing there.
As we listen to the anonymous symphony for toy instruments, alleged to have been composed by various authors – from Joseph Haydn to Leopold Mozart – the fourth room we visit on the New Year’s Eve will be a child’s one. There is no December without Tchaikovsky’s The Nutckracker, as we love what we know so well!
