In chamber music, playing well is not enough – musicians must also know how to listen and how best to accompany one another. This is why chamber music competitions are among the most demanding, but also the most rewarding: they recognise the art of collaboration. Here, every note can be a response to a fellow performer, and success depends on the ability to build a shared musical vision and breathe together as musicians.

For more than two decades, the International Competition of Duets with Harp in Cieszyn has remained a unique event. It is one of the few competitions in the world devoted to ensembles united by one common element: the harp. An instrument associated for centuries with delicacy and lyricism reveals a far broader range of possibilities here, above all by forming a relationship with its partner instrument based on balance and mutual trust.

The Prize-Winners’ Concert introduces us to young artists at the threshold of their careers. Their interpretations reveal not only excellent technical preparation, but also imagination and the joy of making music together. Perhaps this is precisely where the special appeal of chamber music lies: it pushes the element of rivelry into the background. Although chamber music often leads to success in competitions, its greatest strength remains conversation – conducted without words, but with an extraordinary attentiveness to one another.

This idea is also fostered by the competition itself, organised by the Polish Harp Society and the Centre for Artistic Education. Alongside the auditions, it creates a space for discussing music, exploring new means of expression together and improvising – a skill that is making an increasingly confident return to the world of classical music. Workshops, meetings and a harp jam session demonstrate that tradition and spontaneity need not be mutually exclusive. On the contrary, they can inspire one another, opening up entirely new possibilities for collaboration among young musicians.
