A worthy successor to great tenorists, both those rooted in free and in the Black tradition, such as Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, and David S. Ware. At 39, the musician is entering his greatest period. He is decided, confident, and unwilling to compromise. Lewis’ artistic honesty proves extraordinarily communicative and speaks to wider audiences as well. The formula of a saxophone trio is a mixture of freedom and discipline that works just perfectly for him. The solid groove of the drums and the cello (!) acts as an anchor, simultaneously allowing the leader, gliding across expressive improvisations, to spread his wings.
[Tomasz Gregorczyk, translated by Mikołaj Witkowski]
