Jim Black – considered to be one of the best contemporary drummers, probably the most sought after sideman of the New York improvised music scene, engaging in jazz, ethnic and rock projects. The most spectacular embodiment of his musical visions is the AlasNoAxis Icelandic-American quartet, established with the onset of the century.
The year of the band’s foundation was also the year in which their first, eponymous, album caused a general sensation and inspired admiration with its new, hypnotising and clever compositions.
According to the old jazz adage, a band is just as good as its drummer. If so, the bands in which Jim Black has played must be formidable ones. This has been proven with the albums he has recorded with the most famous of modern jazz groups, lead by Dave Douglas (Tint Bell Trio), Tim Berne (Bloodcount) and Uri Caine, with whom he was rediscovering Mahler, Mozart or Gershwin.
