ECHO Rising Stars / Simply Quartet - NOSPR
ECHO Rising Stars / Simply Quartet
The string quartet found widespread popularity in the 19th century, personifying the tradition of music-making at home and absolute music. Simultaneously, composers were trying and testing the boundaries of its formal framework. In his late quartets, Beethoven sought unity achieved through difference – through contrast, but also repetition. The theme of the fugue appears in the first and the last one of the, as many as, seven movements of the String Quartet in C sharp minor, while the whole of the piece is permeated by the reflexive adagio tempo. In his early opus, Webern still has much respect for the genre and his predecessor who worked in Vienna just like him (although a hundred years earlier). However, the aphoristic size of his Five Movements – only a quarter against Beethoven’s three quarters – together with the loosened tonal framework and daring articulation techniques, do open new perspectives. Lacherstorfer, a popular violinist and vocalist, adds further elements to the tradition of the string quartet, also thanks to her ties to Austrian folklore.
