The Munich-born soprano Susanne Bernhard received her vocal training at the University of Music and Performing Arts (HMT) in Munich, where she appeared in numerous productions of the Bavarian Theatre Academy. As a young emerging artist, she was mentored by August Everding and made her debut in 1997 as Susanna in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at the Prinzregententheater in Munich.

Immediately after completing her studies, she joined the ensemble of the Opera House of the City of Kiel. She has since appeared as a guest at several major opera houses, including Oper Frankfurt and the Semperoper Dresden.

Most recently, she made her debut in the role of Leonore in Beethoven’s Fidelio at Theater Bregenz under the baton of Karsten Januschke, as well as with the Stavanger Symphony Orchestra conducted by Markus Stenz.

Her extensive concert career has led to collaborations with distinguished conductors such as Enoch zu Guttenberg, Thomas Søndergård, Semyon Bychkov, Daniel Harding, Andrew Manze, Markus Poschner, Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, Kristjan Järvi, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Ralf Otto, Yutaka Sado, Eiji Oue, Helmuth Rilling, Thierry Fischer, Marin Alsop, Marcus Bosch, and Michael Sanderling.

Susanne Bernhard is particularly renowned for her interpretations of works by Richard Strauss, including the Four Last Songs, as well as Verdi’s Messa da Requiem, Beethoven’s Missa solemnis and Symphony No. 9, and major works by Gustav Mahler and Antonín Dvořák. She is a frequent guest with leading orchestras and at international festivals.

She has collaborated repeatedly with the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, the Munich Radio Orchestra, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra (OSESP), and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

In March 2022, Susanne Bernhard made her debut with Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with the Berlin Philharmonic under the direction of Daniel Barenboim. In June 2023, she performed Schoenberg’s Gurre-Lieder under Petr Popelka at the Prague State Opera.

Upcoming engagements include concerts with the Dresden Philharmonic, the Philharmonischer Chor Berlin (Jörg-Peter Weigle), the Czech Philharmonic in Prague (Lukáš Vasilek), Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem conducted by Andrew Manze, further concerts under Markus Poschner, and Janáček’s Glagolitic Mass with the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto.

Numerous radio broadcasts and CD recordings document her artistic work. She also serves as a lecturer for solo voice at the University of Augsburg (LMC).
