Rudi Mahall - NOSPR

Rudi Mahall Clarinet

Rudi Mahall is a legendary figure on the international jazz/avantgarde scene. As a member of Schlippenbach's Globe Unity Orchestra, Monk's Casino and Die Enttäusshung he has gained a reputation as one the great European improvisors and a unique communicator on the bass clarinet. He masters both Bb clarinet and bass clarinet as no one else in this world and with his intense, positive musical expression he is always fun to experience live.

Rudi Mahall was born 1966 in Nürnberg, Germany. He is and was part of the avant-garde bands Hartmann 8, Der Rote Bereich, with John Schröder and Frank Möbus, carried out several projects and published CDs with Aki Takase about the work of Eric Dolphy and other. He performed in concerts together with Conny and Johannes Bauer, Lee Konitz, Barry Guy, Marty Cook, Karl Berger, Paul Lovens, Radu Malfatti, Jim Black, Ed Schuller and many others. He is one of the main proponents of the contemporary Berlin Jazz scene and has an international fan base by now.

Rudi Mahall is known for his natural witty playing on stage that makes each performance an event. His quote opening his recent album The Straight Horn of Rudi Mahall gives a good idea about Rudi’s persistence and dedication to his instrument:

“Everyone hates the clarinet. It was then, and still is today, a pretty much out-of-favor instrument in jazz music. You can’t get anywhere with the clarinet.”
