Rafał TomkiewiczCounter-tenor

Countertenor, Doctor of Arts, and graduate of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw (2018), where he studied under Prof. Artur Stefanowicz. Between 2017 and 2019, he was a participant in the Opera Academy, i.e. young talents development programme, at the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera. A finalist in the prestigious Cesti Competition in Innsbruck (2018), dedicated to early music.

In the 2025/26 season, he will appear in the following leading roles: as Giulio Cesare in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto at the Landestheater Salzburg, as Ottone in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea (The Coronation of Poppaea) at the Staatstheater Darmstadt, and as Poro in Poro, Re dell’Indie (Porus, King of the Indians) and Athamas in Semele by Handel at the Opera Rara Festival.

His most recent parts are the following: Oberon in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Oper Graz; La Virtù in Vivaldi’s La Senna festeggiante (The Rejoicing Seine) at the Opéra Royal de Versailles; Unulfo in Handel’s Rodelinda at Oper Frankfurt, MusikTheater an der Wien, and Sala Santa Cecilia; Farnace in Mozart’s Mitridate, Re di Ponto (Mithridates, King of Pontus) at the Opera Rara Festival; and Tolomeo in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto at the Warsaw Chamber Opera. He has also appeared at the Handel Festivals in Karlsruhe and Halle, made his debut as Orfeo in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice (Orpheus and Eurydice) with the Pomeranian Philharmonic, and as Pastor in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo (Orpheus) with the ensemble L’Arpeggiata.

He has performed with some of the most respected conductors of early music – Christophe Rousset, Laurence Cummings, George Petrou, and Benjamin Bayle – and with renowned ensembles such as Les Talens Lyriques, Freiburger Barockorchester, and Bach Consort Wien.
