Julian Prégardien is one of the outstanding classical vocal artists of our time. His clarity of voice, deep understanding of text and abilities as a story teller make him an especially gifted recitalist. Julian's artistic activities focus particularly on romantic song recitals and chamber music projects. He is giving recitals all over Europe and he recently has created a new project named "Will the Miller" about the song cycles of Franz Schubert and Wilhelm Müller: Die schöne Müllerin and Winterreise. In occasion of the 200th anniversary of the composition of "Müllerin" he is producing several unique formats, the most outstanding being "Miller*in' Vienna" in Octobre 2023, as well as a radio play, a documentary, a concert film and a cd recording in coproduction with the german radio station SWR.
On the concert stage his season's highlights are invitations by the Wiener Philharmoniker and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig to sing the role of the Evangelist in both Passions by Johann Sebastian Bach, his role debuts as Monteverdis Orfeo at Chateau de Versailles and as Don Ottavio at Mozartwoche Salzburg as well as Mozarts Requiem with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Klaus Mäkelä, the Cleveland Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst and at Teatro San Carlo di Napoli in a staging by Romeo Castellucci together with Raphael Pichon and Ensemble Pygmalion. Further concert appearances will bring him to Stockholm, Paris, New York, Basel and to Händel Festival Halle and to the prestigious festivals of Aix en Provence and Salzburg.
Julian Prégardien was born in Frankfurt in 1984 and received his earliest music training in the choirs of Limburg Cathedral. He studied voice in Freiburg with Reginaldo Pinheiro and with Susanna Eken at the vocal academy of the Aix-en-Provence opera festival and in Copenhagen. He was a member of the Frankfurt Opera ensemble from 2009 to 2013. As an opera singer, he has appeared at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, at the Hamburg and Bavarian State Operas and at the Opéra Comique in Paris. In 2018 he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival as Narraboth in Richard Strauss’ Salome (director: Romeo Castellucci) with the Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Franz Welser-Möst. In 2019 this was followed by his debut as Tamino in a new production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte at the Berlin State Opera under the baton of Alondra de la Parra. As a concert singer he has been appearing in the main european concert halls since more than a decade, focusing especially on the demanding role of the Evangelist by Johann Sebastian Bach. He has recorded both Saint John's and Saint Matthew's Passion with the Bavarian Radio Choir and Concerto Köln. In 2022 a new recording of St Matthew's Passion together with Ensemble Pygmalion and Raphael Pichon has been released on Harmonia Mundi.
Julian's recital recordings include Winterreise, Schwanengesang and Dichterliebe for Alpha Classics, An die Geliebte and Schubertiade for Myrios Classics, Father and Son for Challenge records and Orpheus for cpo. Amongst his artistic partners for song recitals are Daniel Heide, Els Biesemans, Eric le Sage, Kris Bezuidenhout, Lars Vogt, Martin Helmchen and Michael Gees. He has created several projects together with his father Christoph. They have been performing their Duo recital for 15 years allready at many of the most prestigious recital halls and festivals of europe. Other highlights of their unique artistic connection were concert performances of Mozarts Idomeneo together with Kent Nagano and Concerto Köln, a Monteverdi recital together with Anima Eterna Brugge and an orchestra recital together with Orchestre de Chambre de Paris and Lars Vogt.
In 2017 Julian Prégardien was appointed as a professor at the Munich University of Music and Theatre’s vocal department. He is a member of the Schumann Network and artistic director of the Brentano Academy in Aschaffenburg, Germany. He has curated an entire season of recitals and chamber music in Zurich in 2016/2017, was Artist in Residence at Mozartfest Würzburg in 2019 and at Cologne Philharmonic Hall in 2020/2021.
