Isabelle Cals has sung in many of Europe’s major opera houses and concert halls, among them Opéra national de Paris, La Scala, Barbican Centre, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, La Monnaie, Teatro Regio di Torino, Grand Théâtre de Genève, and Théâtre du Châtelet.
Among the conductors with whom she has appeared are Colin Davis (with whom she's recorded The Trojans and Benvenuto Cellini), Armin Jordan, Antonio Pappano, Valery Gergiev, Lawrence Foster, Alain Altinoglu, Daniel Harding, John Nelson, James Conlon, Michel Plasson, Jesús López Cobos.
Her roles abound in numerous creations of Giulietta (Les contes d'Hoffmann), Béatrice (Béatrice et Bénédict), Ascanio (Benvenuto Cellini), Mélisande (Pelléas et Mélisande), Hélène (La belle Hélène), Concepcion (L’heure espagnole), Carmen (title role), Donna Elvira (Don Giovanni), Armide (title role), the Governess (The Turn of the Screw), Tatiana (Eugene Onegin), Madame Lidoine (Dialogues des carmélites), Alice Ford (Falstaff), Marguerite (La damnation de Faust), the Foreign Princess (Rusalka) and Kundry (Parsifal).
Her extensive symphonic repertoire includes among other pieces Beethoven’s 9th Symphony (Opéra de Marseille, Opéra de Nice, Shanghai Opera House) and Ah! perfido (Orchestre de chambre de Paris), Wagner’s Wesendonck-Lieder (Landesjugendorchester Berlin), Berlioz’s Les nuits d’été (Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse) and La mort de Cléopâtre (with Claire Levacher and with Jean-François Heisser), Ravel’s Shéhérazade (with François-Xavier Roth), Messiaen’s Harawi (Festival Messiaen), Strauss’ Vier letzte Lieder (Festival du Septembre Musical de l’Orne), and Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher (Festival Radio France).
Isabelle Cals began her career at the Centre de formation lyrique of the Opéra national de Paris, during which time she represented France at the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. She also holds a Master's degree in Chinese and an advanced degree in international relations.
