The Austrian baritone Florian Boesch is one of the great Lied interpreters of our time, having performed at the Vienna Musikverein and Konzerthaus, London's Wigmore Hall, Carnegie Hall New York, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Laeiszhalle Hamburg, Konzerthaus Dortmund, the Cologne Philharmonie, the deDoelen Rotterdam, the Philharmonie Luxembourg as well as at the Edinburgh Festival, the Schwetzingen Festival and the Salzburg Festival. In Glasgow and in Australia (Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne), he has performed all three major Schubert cycles together with Malcolm Martineau. As artist in residence, he has performed at the Wigmore Hall, the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid and the Theater an der Wien. In the 2021/2022 season, he was able to demonstrate his versatility as artist in residence at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.
A welcome guest on the concert platform, Florian Boesch has performed with such renowned orchestras as the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under such renowned conductors as Giovanni Antonini, Ivor Bolton, Teodor Currentzis, Riccardo Chailly, Gustavo Dudamel, Adam Fischer, Iván Fischer, Stefan Gottfried, Philippe Herreweghe, Pablo Heras-Casado, Vladimir Jurowski, Mariss Jansons, Sir Roger Norrington, Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Sir Simon Rattle, Robin Ticciati and Franz Welser-Möst. Florian Boesch has worked closely with Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Their most recent joint projects were Handel's Messiah and Saul at the Vienna Musikverein and Purcell's The Fairy Queen at the styriarte festival in 2014. At the Salzburg Festival, they performed together in Haydn's The Creation and The Seasons.
Highlights of the current season include concerts with the LSO and Sir Simon Rattle in Edinburgh and at the BBC Proms, Haydn's The Seasons with Il Giardino Armonico and Giovanni Antonini, Beethoven's Mass in C major with the Tonhalle Orchestra - also under Giovanni Antonini, Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 with the Munich Philharmonic and Pablo Heras-Casado as well as with the Czech Philharmonic under Semyon Bychkov, Brahms' Requiem and Bach's St Matthew Passion with the Collegium Vocale Gent and Philippe Herreweghe, Beethoven's Missa Solemnis with the Vienna Philharmonic and Herbert Blomstedt, to name but a few. He also gives recitals at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, London's Wigmore Hall, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid and at the Wiesbaden Festival.
Florian Boesch also impressed on the opera stage most recently with Handel's Saul and Orlando in Claus Guth's production at the Theater an der Wien. Other acclaimed interpretations include Schubert's Lazarus and Handel's Messiah, Jonathan Peachum in Kurt Weill's Threepenny Opera, Purcell's Fairy Queen, Alban Berg's Wozzeck and Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro at the Theater an der Wien as well as Méphistophélès in Berlioz' La Damnation de Faust at the Schiller Theatre under the direction of Sir Simon Rattle at the Berlin State Opera. The most important productions of his career include Alban Berg's Wozzeck in Cologne and Mozart's Così fan tutte at the Salzburg Festival. In the 2022/2023 season, Florian Boesch made his debut at the Vienna State Opera with the Mahler project Von der Liebe Tod (Calixto Bieito & Lorenzo Viotti), while in May 2023 he appeared in a staged production of Schubert's Die Schöne Müllerin with Nikolaus Habjan and Musicbanda Franui at the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, which was also performed at the Bregenz Festival, the Graz Opera and the Salzkammergut Festival in Gmunden. This successful production will be revived at the Theater an der Wien in November 2023. Before that, he will once again take on the role of Zoroastro in Claus Guth's production of Handel's Orlando in October, this time at the Teatro Real in Madrid.Seine Einspielungen wurden von der internationalen Presse gefeiert und zahlreich ausgezeichnet, u.a. mit dem Edison Klassiek Award 2012. Die schöne Müllerin war für den Grammy 2015 in der Kategorie Best Classical Vocal Solo nominiert. Anfang September 2017 erschien bei Hyperion seine neue Einspielung von Schuberts Winterreise mit
Roger Vignoles at the piano; this was followed in autumn 2018 by orchestrated Schubert lieder with the Concentus Musicus Wien under the direction of Stefan Gottfried. His recording of Schumann and Mahler lieder, released on Linn Records, won the BBC Music Magazine Award. In May 2023, he released a new album with Schumann's Dichterliebe and Kerner Lieder, also on the Linn Records label.
Florian Boesch received his first singing lessons from KS Ruthilde Boesch. During his studies at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, he attended the Lied and Oratorio class with KS Robert Holl. Florian Boesch has held a professorship for Lied and Oratorio at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna since autumn 2015.
