Musical Director of the Orquestra de Valencia and Artistic Advisor of the Palau de la Música Valencia since the 2022/23 season, the distinguished German conductor Alexander Liebreich is also President of the Richard-Strauss-Gesellschaft and Artistic Director of the Richard Strauss Festival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen since 2018, succeeding Wolfgang Sawallisch and Brigitte Fassbaender. He has previously held the positions of Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra (2018-2022), Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) (season 2012-2019), and Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Munich Chamber Orchestra (2006-2016).
His extensive career has led him to be a guest conductor with numerous prestigious orchestras, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Munich Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra, the Dresden Philharmonic, the St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra Nippon Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, and Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. Recent and upcoming highlights include debuts at the Grafenegg Festival, George Enescu Festival, La Folle Journée in Warsaw, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, and Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon. He regularly performs with distinguished soloists such as Lisa Batiashvili, Veronika Eberle, Krystian Zimerman, Frank Peter Zimmermann, Gautier Capuçon, Alban Gerhardt, Leila Josefowicz, and Isabelle Faust.
Alexander Liebreich, born in Regensburg, studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and gained much of his early artistic experience with both Michael Gielen and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. He was greatly influenced by his mentor, Claudio Abbado, who invited him to participate in and attend productions at the Salzburger Osterfestspiele with the Berliner Philharmoniker and in Bolzano with the Gustav-Mahler-Jugend Orchestra. In October 2016, the Bavarian Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and the Arts announced that Alexander Liebreich had been awarded the Bavarian Special Culture Prize.
