Dance! – cries the Persian poet and theologian Rumi, whose poetry inspired Karol Szymanowski and whose example led to the founding, in Konya, during the thirteenth century, of the Order of Whirling Dervishes, celebrating the love of God in dancing meditation. Dance links body and soul, as we sense when listening to Anne Clyne’s composition, imbued with strength, lyricism and lush melodies, written for the Israeli cellist Inbal Segev, who is our guest at the NOSPR. Before that, we will hear one of the most beautiful sunrises in music, contained in Haydn’s Sixth Symphony, and the motif of the dance of death in Sibelius’ famous Valse triste will lead us further, towards the moving image of somebody aware that they are dying, in the symphonic poem Death and Transfiguration. Apparently, on the cusp of death, a person sees their whole life passing before them – what a theme for the imagination of Richard Strauss!
